Are you an open-minded, bright and motivated researcher with high ambitions for an academic career? Then this Tenure Track position might be the perfect opportunity for you! We are looking for a skilled scientist to expand our expertise in carbon micro- and nanoengineering, with the ambition to design, fabricate and characterize functional carbon microstructures and nanomaterials with tailored properties for specific applications.

Carbon microelectrodes with high active surface area and 3D architecture are very promising for energy storage in supercapacitors and batteries, electrosynthesis, water purification, electrochemical biosensing, microbial fuel cells or as smart scaffolds for electrochemical monitoring of cells. However, in most of these applications, optimal performance can only be achieved by precise control of surface properties, deposition of nanomaterials, engineering of porosity and tailoring of the structural properties of the carbon electrode itself.

We are looking for a colleague contributing to our research on micro- and nanofabrication of carbon electrodes. As a faculty member you will complement our own competences in micro- and nanoengineering with novel ideas and strategies for tailoring of surface and bulk properties of carbon materials for specific applications. Fundamental understanding of the involved chemical and physical processes requires your skills in material science, chemistry and/or electrochemistry.

The position will involve teaching in existing relevant courses, developing new course materials and collaboration with other DTU departments, on topics in nanofabrication and characterization.

The position will be affiliated with the Biomaterial Microsystems group headed by Prof. Stephan S. Keller at DTU Nanolab. The group develops 3D polymer and carbon micro- and nanostructures for applications in life science, health tech and sustainable energy. The main focus of the group is on novel micro- and fabrication strategies and the characterization of the resulting structures and devices.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your main focus will be to contribute to research on carbon microstructures and nanomaterials for applications such as energy storage, electrochemical sensing and bioelectrochemical systems. More specifically, you will assist in micro- and nanofabrication of carbon electrodes and be responsible for the development of novel strategies tailoring their bulk and surface properties. As some of the main tasks you will

  • Design and fabricate 2D and 3D polymer micro- and nanostructures with methods such as additive manufacturing, electrospinning and imprinting
  • Implement pyrolysis processes for the conversion of the polymer structures into carbon micro- and nanoelectrodes
  • Develop strategies for physical and chemical modification of carbon electrodes
  • Analyze surface and bulk properties of carbon micro- and nanomaterials with methods such as XRD, XPS, Raman, BET, SEM and TEM
  • Identify novel applications for functional carbon materials in collaboration with other departments at DTU and internationally leading research groups
  • Attract funding for research projects on functional carbon materials
  • Disseminate your knowledge in the field at conferences
  • Develop teaching content for existing and new courses

We are looking for a highly skilled scientist with experience in chemical and physical surface modification, (bio)functionalization, nanomaterial deposition and characterization of carbon electrodes. Furthermore, deep knowledge of electrochemical methods is desirable. You should be an engaged and inspiring teacher, and be eager to supervise students in projects.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses. You must be fluent in English, both oral and writing.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
