The National Centre for Nano Fabrication and Characterization at DTU Nanolab invites for applications for a position as Professor in Electron Microscopy of Dynamical Processes.

DTU Nanolab is a central research infrastructure at DTU with the overall mission of contributing to research, development, innovation, and education within the following scientific areas: Development and application of advanced characterization methods by means of electron microscopy and development and application of advanced micro- and nanofabrication technology.

DTU Nanolab consists of two facilities: Cleanroom for Nano fabrication and Electron Microscopy facility for Nano characterization. Both facilities are located at DTU’s Lyngby Campus.

The successful candidate is expected to lead the research at DTU Nanolab on 
dynamic phenomena at the nano and atomic scale by means of electron microscopy-based imaging and spectroscopic characterization of nanostructured materials under various stimuli (including gas environment and elevated temperature). Machine-assisted data analysis will be part of the research area in order to optimize the acquisition-analysis workflow of the microscopy data.

You will work in close collaboration with other DTU departments to ensure a good understanding of the mutual requirements on sample and instrumentation for reliable in- operando studies. Research-based method and technique development within electron microscopy of dynamical processes is required to bring the research field to the forefront within nanoscale characterization.

Responsibilities and tasks
The appointed professor will work alongside DTU Nanolab’s scientific staff in general and will report to the head of DTU Nanolab’s Characterization section in order to ensure that DTU Nanolab contributes to and expand DTU’s existing research efforts through national and international collaboration. 

This is a permanent appointment with the following primary areas of responsibility:
 

  • Development of a reliable framework for extracting structural and functional properties of nanostructured materials from electron beam based characterization techniques
  • Establishing the machine assisted analysis optimized for experimental data acquired at DTUs electron microscopes
  • Education and teaching within nanofabrication and characterization as part of DTU Nanolabs teaching portfolio including development of e-learning material
An important task of this position is to secure national and international research funding in this area, which should lead to the establishment of an internationally acknowledged research group in the described research field.

The successful candidate should be prepared to supervise PhD students and is expected to be involved in teaching activities related to BSc and MSc level students. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years. 

Qualifications
We expect the successful candidate to have a strong documented academic background within practical electron microscopy of material science in general and in situ environmental electron microscopy of dynamical processes in particular.

Leadership experience and or education at group or project leader level is a requirement as well as teaching and supervision experience at all levels (bachelor, master and PhD). In addition we expect an ambitious candidate aiming to work on the absolute forefront of this research field.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

DTU Nanolab is the National Centre of Nanofabrication and Characterization owned by and located at DTU with approximate 100 staff members. DTU Nanolab operates and maintains advanced processing equipment within 1350 m2, class 10-100, ISO 9001-certified, open access, pay-per-use cleanroom facilities. In a separate specially constructed building the center operates 8 state-of-the-art electron microscopes, among them four Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) and a Dual Beam Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB SEM).
